Danh sách đề cử cho Giải thưởng điện ảnh danh giá nhất hành tinh Oscar lần thứ 84 đã chính thức được Chủ tịch Viện hàn lâm Khoa học và Nghệ thuật điện ảnh Tom Sherak và nữ diễn viên Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games) công bố. Tuy thua The Artist trong cả đề cử lẫn giành giải Quả cầu vàng vừa qua, nhưng bộ phim giả tưởng 3D dành cho trẻ em Hugo của đạo diễn Martin Scorsese, đã thống trị đề cử Oscar với 11 hạng mục, trong đó bao gồm hạng mục lớn nhất – Best Picture (Phim xuất sắc nhất).
Đứng ngay sau Hugo chính là bộ phim câm thuộc thể loại đen trắng The Artist. Tại Lễ trao giải Quả cầu vàng, The Artist đã bước lên bục cao nhất giành giải Phim hài/ca nhạc xuất sắc nhất. Trong cuộc chạy đua tới giải Oscar danh giá, bộ phim câm đã giành được tới 10 đề cử, trong đó có 5 đề cử chính gồm Best Picture (Phim xuất sắc nhất), Best Director (Đạo diễn xuất sắc nhất), Best Screenplay (Kịch bản xuất sắc nhất), Best Actor (Nam diễn viên chính xuất sắc nhất) và Best Actress (Nữ diễn viên chính xuất sắc nhất).
Năm nay có tổng cộng 9 đề cử cho hạng mục Phim hay nhất, trong đó có The Descendants, The Help, Moneyball, Midnight in Paris, The Tree of Life, War Horse, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Hugo và tất nhiên The Artist.
Cũng tương tự như đề cử Quả cầu vàng, trong hạng mục Nam diễn viên chính xuất sắc nhất, là cuộc đối đầu của hai người bạn thân George Clooney (The Descendants) và Brad Pitt (Moneyball). Họ phải tranh tài với những ứng cử viên khác gồm Demian Bichir (A Better Life), Gary Oldman (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), và Jean Dujardin (The Artist). Giải thưởng Nữ diễn viên chính xuất sắc nhất tiếp tục là cuộc đối đầu giữa ngôi sao trẻ Rooney Mara với các diễn viên gạo cội như Meryl Streep và Glenn Close.
